Trump is many things to many people, but mostly he is a distraction, distracting us from the national democracy and the national business.
Regrettably, we haven’t paid enough attention to those things, and we’ve lost focus on the national democracy and the national business. Thanks to Trump, we are in a profound national decline.
It’s time to ignore him and the narcissistic distractions he creates. It’s time for us to pay attention to what we learned or should shade learned in social studies.
It’s time for us to recognize that we are all part of a fundamental social compact that has kept us together, kept us productive and kept us safe over these 230 years.
It’s time, past time, for us to restate and renew our marital vows to the country, to the Constitution and to the rule of law, just like married couples reaffirm their vows in Japan.
We need to reestablish the social compact that has bound us, the fundamental promise to care for and take care of each other, and thus the country as a whole.
It’s time to see the realities and turn our backs on the likes of Trump and to remarry the rule of law, the Constitution, the social compact.
This would be a great challenge, not at all easy, even if we had lots of time and broad support.
But we don’t have lots of time or broad support - many say we have only 20 days before the clock runs out on Election Day.
Without relief from our domestic war, the other issues can’t be resolved - abortion, guns, climate change, voting, the social safety net or the liberal world order, all now in great jeopardy thanks to Trump and his fellow travelers.
The country is like a bicycle - the components and component issues, the national business, cannot be addressed or accomplished if the frame, the framework, is broken.
It will take immediate attention and profound changes in the sensibility of at least half the country for us to survive as a democracy or a country.
We are all going to pay a high price to save ourselves. More than just gas prices or the stock market.
Get ready for sweeping changes that will now affect all of us, one way or the other.
Hoping for the best,
