WE CARE ABOUT UKRAINE
We've been following it the events in Ukraine since February, and we've done more than 50 shows about it, many with Ukrainians in Ukraine and other places in Europe and for that matter in Hawaii. See our Crisis in Ukraine playlist on YouTube. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQpkwcNJny6mECZhmqMtAK-a4RpC7gvsj
We care about Ukraine. Let us count the ways, and why. The people; their remarkable courage, resourcefulness, strength, modesty and determination, as demonstrated every day of this war; their culture, art, architecture and history. which Putin is trying to stamp out; their sense of identity and togetherness even in the face of this incredible and devastating adversity.
How can we help them. Well, we can help them when they come here, and show aloha for them, as we covered in a show on 4/20. See https://youtu.be/4y9DvNo59VY. We can send them money through a number of refugee and humanitarian nonprofits, just look them up. We can write to our delegation and other government officials to remind them that we want the government to keep on sending the weapons Zelensky has been requesting.
You can, and should, stay informed on what is happening there, even if the news cycles moves on. And of course you can watch ThinkTech shows on the subject and even come on one of shows to talk about it.
How optimistic should we be about their chances at winning the war or surviving the onslaught of the invasion It's hard to be wildly optimistic when the Russians are relentlessly destroying the country and doing mass murder, war crimes and shocking atrocities on the people. Every day seems a tipping point for worse. It's hard to watch, but we need to watch it.
How important is this war for Ukraine, for Europe, for the U.S., for democracy, and for the liberal world order we built after WWII. As Zelensky and many others have said, the Ukrainians are doing our work for us in protecting these things. It is a terrifying inflection point in world history, and we need always to keep that in mind.
Of course, we have serious problems in this country, too. We were focusing on those problems during Trump, at the expense of dealing with so many other issues we should have been facing. It's amazing how Trump disrupted our priorities. We've been wasting time on the things he distracted us about, and still does, and we have fallen behind in dealing with and advancing our interests in the community of nations.
The invasion of Ukraine changes everything. It puts the world order in question, it puts global democracy in question, it puts the global economy in question, and it puts the future of our country in question. These are issues we weren't thinking about, but now it's clear we need to take a leadership role to deal with them, not only for the sake of the Ukrainians but for our own sake. It's not an option, it's an absolutely critical requirement for the survival of the free world, including the U.S. Isolationism will lead us to disaster.
