HAWAII'S FOOD FUTURE No one can say that we are prepared for a supply line food shortage here.  If the supply line fails or slows, we are all in deep kim chee, and I don't mean pickled cabbage.  More like we are all going to get very hungry. Pretty much all our food is from the mainland, and has to be shipped in.  If you think about it this is actually pretty scary.  That's why we've been talking about diversified agriculture for so many years, but sorry we've done little or nothing to actually do something about it. The great plantations of yesteryear, which could have been the foundation of a huge diversified agricultural industry, lie fallow, many of them in land bank status waiting for housing developments, condos of courses.   They will make much more money per acre.  Sad that the owners of the plantations have given up and really don't do anything to diversify.  Everyone knows that the cost of farmland is too expensive for small farms and di...

HERE COME THE ELECTIONS! This is absolutely 2022, an election year.  We have both local and national elections in November, and we need to get ready for them. That is, we need to know who the candidates are and what their issues and platforms are, both local and national.  It's our duty, more important now than ever, to be good citizens, to educate ourselves about what and who we are voting for, and of course to actually vote. 2022 SPRING FUND DRIVE BEGINS Time for our Spring Fund Drive.   We’ll be sending our lots of HTML mail and putting lots of notices on our website and social media platforms.   We’ll also be playing a variety of fund drive videos. BEYOND UKRAINE, IS WORLD DEMOCRACY IN PERIL? Over the past few weeks, even a cursory reading of the media reminds us that (a) the country is fragmented, (b) voting in 2022 and 2024 is likely to be chaotic, (c) Russia's war against Ukraine is hybrid and has deployed elements beyond kinetic warfare, i.e., propaganda, disinformation, and cyberwar, and may well also include chemical and biological weapons, and even tactical nuclear weapons, (d) some of those weapons will also be used, or are being used, against the United States, (e) our world is dividing into defined camps of democratic governments versus autocratic governments.
